At Rhode Island Center Assisting those in Need (RI CAN) the arrival of summer brings relief from the colder months, but also an increased fear for many struggling families—as their children will no longer have access to free or reduced breakfast and lunch. A child going to bed hungry is something none of us like to think about but unfortunately it is a reality for many.
According to 2013 RI Kids Count statistics, there are 3,969 students from low-income households in Washington County—with the majority of these children participating in daily reduced or free breakfast and lunch programs during the school year.
All parents want their children to be well-fed, but when a family runs out of money for food, the children suffer. Sadly, the slow economic growth along with state’s highest unemployment rate in the nation has resulted in more and more families at our door.
To ensure healthy meals for our local children, we established RI CAN Kids’ Summer Food Program, which provides supplemental items like peanut butter, jelly, fresh produce, snacks and juice; however, our resources our limited. We need your help now. Please support our important work and the good folks who rely on our services.
By supporting RI CAN, you are contributing to the well-being of your neighbors, your child’s schoolmates, your friend’s grandchildren. Your generosity keeps their bellies nutritionally full and their families financially stable.
Together we CAN make a difference.
