South County is a beautiful, popular tourist destination filled with summer homes, beachfront resorts, recreational parks, wildlife refuges and classic New England centers. But South County is also a place where people struggle every day to afford basic needs.
According to Rhode Island Kids Count, a poverty-level family of three living in Washington County needs 73 percent of their income to pay for rent, leaving little for much else. More often, our struggling neighbors need to rely on community resources to get them through the tough times.
Rhode Island Center Assisting those in Need (RI CAN) helps families in need by providing weekly emergency food assistance as well as other vital wrap-around support services. Sadly, the ongoing economic recession and Rhode Island’s highest unemployment rate in the country, has more and more people are waiting at our door. We are hard pressed to meet our mission and desperately need the help of our community to continue to feed, clothe and shelter the vulnerable among us.
In 2013, RI CAN distributed food and personal hygiene supplies to 1,173 households with 7,485 visits to our emergency feeding programs alone—which equates to serving a total of 18,330 people annually.
Our resources are limited. We are currently relying heavily on our Food Rescue Program to keep our shelves stocked. It is a very labor intensive effort, whereby, we travel to area Walmart and BJ’s stores to recover surplus items, including produce, meat and canned goods. Since beginning the program in 2011, we have rescued over 803,000 pounds of food. But it’s not enough.
We need your help now. Please support our important work and the good folks who rely on our services. You will be contributing to the well-being of your neighbors, your child’s schoolmates, your friend’s grandchildren: our community.
Together we CAN make a difference.
